In a recent article by Samnytt, findings from Säpo (Swedish Security Service) shed light on the escalating terrorism threat facing Sweden, mainly emanating from Muslim migrants. According to the report, there has been a sharp increase in the number of migrants suspected of posing a terrorist or security threat.
Last year, Säpo identified 1,063 migrants – averaging three individuals per day – deemed to constitute such a threat. This information is crucially forwarded to the Swedish Migration Agency to deter the granting of work permits, residence permits, or citizenship to these individuals.
The report attributes the significant rise in dangerous individuals to an increased Islamic terrorist threat level and a growing influx of illegals with malicious intent seeking entry into Sweden. Moreover, improved detection capabilities have enabled Säpo to identify migrants previously undetected.
Highlighting concerns, the report indicates that quota refugees are also identified as potential threats. Despite a reduction in the quota from 6,400 to 900 people in 2023, initiated by The Sweden Democrats, the proportion of suspected terrorist and security threats has surged from 3 percent to 8-9 percent among this group.
Furthermore, the report underscores Säpo’s reliance on another authority to detect suspicions due to a lack of expertise among handlers. Additionally, Säpo claims to have ‘other sources’ domestically and internationally, though the majority remain confidential.
The report also addresses Sweden’s terrorism threat rating, which was elevated from the third to the fourth level in August last year. This heightened rating signifies a significantly increased risk of terrorist activity, with concerns including potential violent retaliatory actions by Muslims enraged over Koran burnings.
Sweden’s threat level scale consists of five levels where the lowest level (1) signifies no identified threat, limited threat (2), heightened threat (3), high threat (4), and very high threat (5). Each level encompasses a broad spectrum, allowing for variations within each category. For example, heightened threat (3) suggests the presence of actors with both intent and ability, implying that a terrorist attack may occur.
